Hurricane Orlene is the 16th named storm of the East Pacific hurricane season which reached until Category 4. Orlene, was formed as a tropical storm last Thursday (29/10) over the Pacific Ocean western of Guerrero. As the storm was heading northwards it found warm humid currents and was upgraded on the 1rst of October to a Hurricane Category 1 with sustainable winds of 120-140 km/h. As Orlene continued its northwards course quickly gained power, peaking as a Category 2 Hurricane on the 2nd of October, while later that day was upgraded to a Category 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 210-215km/h. As the hurricane was heading quickly towards the western parts of Mexico it had already brought torrential rain, and thunderstorms across the western coast of Mexico. A hurricane warning was in effect from San Blas to Mazatlan, while the government of Jalisco state suspended classes Monday in towns and cities along the coast. In Sinaloa, some emergency shelters were opened.

Today Orlene is a Category 2 Hurricane with sustained winds of 150-165km/h and has just crossed the land and is centered between Durango, Nayarit and Sinaloa, while is predicted to lose its power until tomorrow as it is entering through the land. Severe thunderstorms and torrential rain are expected during the day across the western coast of Mexico, mostly over the coast of Sinaloa and Nayarit where accumulation rates can reach 100-120mm during the next 24 hours. The most important characteristic of the Hurricane will be the strong winds which will create large swells which could cause severe coastal flooding.

Mexico’s National Water Commission said Orlene could cause “mudslides, rising river and stream levels, and flooding in low-lying areas.”
