Temperature record for February: 37°C in Morocco

A high pressure system across the western Mediterranean Sea was dominating Morocco the last few days bringing temperatures 10-12°C above normal. The peak of the severe heat wave was on Wednesday 14 February as the isotherm at 850 hPa (approximately 1500 meters above sea level) reached +22°C.

Temperature record at 37°C – The last few days Morocco was affected by the heat wave reaching maximum temperatures 35-37°C on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 of February. In Tan-Tan, on Wednesday, a national record was set, as it reached 36.6°C, while the previous record was 36.3°C in Nouasseur in 1960. Monthly records also include 36.4°C in Essaouira and 36.0°C in Agadir, while other notable maximums include 35.6°C in Safi, 35.4°C in Agadir al Massira, 34.8° C in Casablanca and 33°C in Marrakech.

From yesterday, cool air masses brought a significant temperature drop of 10°C, but a high pressure reinforcement during the weekend will bring a new temperature rise with maximiìum temperatures reaching 30-32°C in the southern regions.
