A severe weather system is traveling across central Europe threatening Germany now, spreading intense thunderstorms and a tornado has already been formed and others could follow.
From yesterday much of central Europe and southern Scandinavia is experiencing thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, and temperature drop with the most severe weather taking place in the belt of southern England, northern France, the Low Countries, Germany and Denmark.
From today morning the UK, northern France and the Low Countries had been affected by a low pressure system that was “borned” today in France and has already been spreading severe thunderstorms with large hail locally, strong gust winds and excessive rainfall.
The weather system is moving really fast as a short-wave trough from the British Isles will head northeastwards across the Northern Sea towards Denmark, northern Germany and Poland, driven by a strong southwesterly jet stream. The low pressure system is centered between the Low Countries and Germany now (16:00 UTC) accompanied by a warm and a cold front. The system is traveling northeastwards very fast, bringing severe thunderstorms in Germany. The thunderstorms locally will create large hail and isolated supercells are possible, bringing possible tornadoes in Germany, due to the low LCLs and increasing low-level shear, while the highest MLCAPE values are ranging from 500 to 2000 J/kg. Next hours the weather system is expected to become stronger over northern Germany. Today afternoon a low strength tornado hit Germany as we can see in the video below. Later today the weather system will hit Denmark, Chech Republic and overnight will pass through Poland and southern Sweden.
Tomorrow the low pressure system will continue its northeastern course bringing severe thunderstorms and big amounts of rain across eastern Poland, the Baltic states, Belarus, Ukraine and some parts of the northern Balkans and the Alps will be also affected. The countries that will experience the most severe weather will be Poland, Belarus and southern Lithuania.
