After the severe flooding last week in Valencia where at least 220 people lost their lives, a new red alert was issued yesterday for Catalonia, northeastern Spain, for severe weather with torrential rain. The weather system caused devastating flooding in Barcelona. In 4 hours a big amount of water fell and the accumulated rainfall in 12 hours was equal to 180 liters per square meter.

As it can be seen from the photos cars were partially submerged on a highway, car parks, tunnels and garages, making it difficult for the rescue operations to help people that were trapped. Parts of Barcelona’s El Prat airport, the second largest in the country, have been flooded. More than 80 flights have been canceled or delayed, while rail services have been suspended.
