
A high pressure system is dominating the central western Mediterranean Sea over the last few days, bringing a severe heat wave across much of southwestern Europe. The last few days temperatures have been close to 10-12°C above normal, while maximum in many regions were over 32-34°C,in Iberia and France breaking records for October.
In more detail, 1rst and 2nd of October were extremely warm days with temperatures reaching 36-38°C in many cities in Spain and 32-34°C in southern France. New records were broken for this month with temperatures reaching 38.2°C in Montoro, 37.2°C in Seville, 36.7°C in Cordoba and 35.8°C in Granada. In France, temperatures reached 35.6°C in Anglars, 35.5°C in Villaries and 35.3°C in Lavaur. The heat wave was also intense in Italy, while new records have been broken with Florence reaching 33.2°C and Perugia Sant’Egidio 32°C breaking the records of 2011. Locally in Italy, maximum temperatures reached even 33-35°C.
The high pressure system will continue dominating southwestern Europe over the next few days bringing possibly new records for the month of October. The heat wave between Sunday and Monday will also reach northeastern Europe leading to temperatures locally over 29-31°C.
